I’m voting different because Austin is making my home unaffordable
We’re all feeling the squeeze.
Inflation pressures on the national level continue to persist, raising the cost of everything from rent or owning a home to basic groceries and home goods. And even after voters overwhelmingly rejected Proposition Q (the largest tax increase proposal in local history, or a $300 hike per resident) the Austin City Council still increassed property taxes by 10%. Then there’s Project Connect, a mass transit boondoggle and permanent tax that threatens to increase your property taxes between $260 and $440 per year.
True, Austin home prices fell 1.4% this summer, but property tax relief continues to evade our growing area. A recent study showed that for every $100 increase in costs (taxes, cost of living, and otherwise), roughly 9,800 homeowners are thrust into a cost-burdened situation. It now takes an income of $92,000/ year to afford even a modest starter home in the Austin market — a statistic likely to keep rising.
It’s a picture we’re seeing again and again in the Austin metro. We’re paying more for less. And for worse. That’s why we need Austin voters to elect fiscally reponsible candidates this Fall, and up and down the ballot!
