I’m voting different because Austin schools are failing our students

Whether you’re a passionate school choice advocate or support the status quo, the fact is you’re paying for your local public school — likely the highest charge on your annual property tax bill.

Taxpayers and parents of students alike deserve a seat at the table when it comes to their local schools, and the Austin Indepdendent School District is no exception. Sadly, Austin ISD has continued to drain taxpayers for diminished outcomes. Even after submitting state “Robin Hood” recapture payments, the Austin ISD still manages to spend well-above the Texas average per student. It ended the 2025-26 school year with a $105 million deficit (projected to be $19 million in 2025), and hoping to borrow more.

Families are fleeing Austin and the district has had to shut down 11 of its schools — including, recently, the oldest operating school in Texas. Meanwhile, the district continues to subvert community values and the wishes of parents.

Rather than tightening the belt, the district had continued to ask for more tax dollars. Is it any wonder why AISD campuses are facing a potential state takeover for multi-year academic failure?

We can begin the turnaround by electing experienced educator and legislative policy expert Alex San Martin to Place 6 on the AISD Board of Trustees this Fall! Learn more and donate here. Voting for Republicans up and down the ballot this fall will assure that financial sanity takes root again and the wishes of local parents are honored so that our schoolchildren receive the best public education opportunities here in the capital city of Texas.
