See anything ‘phishy’ from us?
With the rise of AI and other sophisticated programming, it has become easier for fraudsters to impersonate (or "clone," “spoof,” etc.) mass numbers of email addresses and other forms of contact from trusted companies and organizations.
Travis County Republican Party staff are not immune from these tactics, often called “phishing” attacks. Sometimes you might notice a suspicious email or other message apparently coming from us. While this kind of thing has become commonplace on the Internet and we do not want to cause any undue alarm, it is important to take every phishing attempt seriously and to always be on guard.
Scam artists will often use a fake email, number, or social media account, so always check the "From" field to look for anything unusual. If it doesn't match the contact info you see on our Contact page then it's not from us.
Our From emails will look something like this:
"name@TravisGOP.com" or
"name.TCRP@gmail.com."
In our chairman's case ...
Chair@TravisGOP.com
Jennifer.TCRP@gmail.com
FleckStrongTexas@gmail.com (her personal address)
From unknown texting or phone numbers: Always feel free to contact us via our Contact Page and we'll let you know if it was from us. Or just delete it.
If coming from a social media page: if you can, visit the profile the message came from. If it is disabled, or the sending account was made recently and has few followers, it is very likely NOT from us. Drop us a line on our Contact Page if you have any questions.
WHAT TO DO next
There's a 99.9% chance we were not "hacked," so don't worry about us! Let's be savvy Internet users and smarter than the scammers! In most cases, you can safely delete the “phishy” message and report it as spam to your email provider at the appropriate link. If you ever have any questions, reach out to us on the Contact page or call headquarters directly and we will verify.
WHAT IF THEY ASK FOR MONEY?
If you gave any money in a suspicious manner, please let us know ASAP so we can help you alert the authorities. We will ONLY request money in the following ways:
ONLINE OR TEXT:
Our official Anedot.com account (for our Sustainers program, Chairman's Circle program, special events, sponsorships, or direct TCRP donations).
Our Luma events account (for special events, etc.). Example.
BY MAIL:
Via check or money order to our headquarters (see address on Contact page).
IN PERSON:
We will request a check or cash, but we will always have a special envelope with our name, logo, and contact info, plus a space to put your information.
NOTE: All money we accept must ask for your employer and occupation (even if retired) for us to comply with state and federal campaign finance laws.
