Top 5 reasons to support Republicans in Austin

We boast often about being the best county party in America. Judge for yourself — get to know us at the next event near you and see what we call "The TCRP difference" at work.

You’ll find that we don't just repeat cable news talking points or engage the politics of the DC swamp. We want everything we do and say to help build the future of the conservative movement, pro-actively grow the Republican Party of the future, and -- most importantly -- recruit new voters to reform and repair the broken system in and around Austin. We keep the torch lit for future victories in Travis County while maintaining an optimistic outlook as “happy warriors.” And we do so without sacrificing our principles at the altar of political correctness.

But the fact is we're the Republican Party in a very Democratic area, which presents as many challenges as it does opportunities. With that in mind, we came up with a list of the Top 5 reasons you should get involved plus ways we're making a lasting difference in the Austin area.

No. 5:
Challenge the Democrat monopoly in the Austin area

A lot of what we do goes beyond our basic duties of hosting a primary and conventions, and providing institutional support for our Republican candidates. We also stand up for our conservative principles in the public arena.

Whether by speaking out at city hall or the Texas Capitol, or taking to the streets and protesting bad legislation, we're eager for the fray. Our communications and outreach programs take our voices to new voters. We're not afraid to let the liberal media know when they failed to get the other side of an important story. There's not a week that goes by in which a Travis County Republican is not quoted in local, state, or national media. And often our appearances and media mentions are daily!

No. 4:
Save money!

As Republicans, we do whatever we can to keep taxes low and government as small as is necessary. Travis County Republicans have a history of pulling the plug on some bad bonds in the past and standing up against even higher taxes in the Austin area.

In the 2022 election alone, Republican voters defeated three bonds in Lake Travis and another bond in Pflugerville.

We're proud of the work our friends and allies are doing to keep the Austin area affordable, and we are always happy to stand with them. We're especially eager to support our many clubs and organizations which often do a deep dive into our community.

We also have several official committees dedicated to important platform principles including elections integrity and public education reform. Let us know if you'd like to serve.

No. 3:
Hard-won elections against the odds are the sweetest victories!

As Texans, we remember the Alamo, but also San Jacinto — our against-all-odds victory defeating an empire at the conclusion of the Texas Revolution.

We can go down a long and proud history of upset victories against local liberals in which TCRP weighed in. In 2022, when voter turnout was low and Democrats handed us many upsets, we won two school board seats in Manor ISD and Leander ISD, respectively. This could not have happened without local Republicans getting the word out and giving the grassroots a megaphone.

(And when we win it’s a big celebration! We never take even the smallest victory forgranted.)

No. 2:
Travis County is home base to our statewide elected officials while in Austin

Whether during the election or during the legislative session or in between, our excitement, our support, and our advocacy of an America-first, conservative administrative agenda reaches all across Texas.

Being the closest county party to our state Capitol, we're eager to get the word out on legislative hearings and other opportunities to speak out on statewide legislation, and be a base of support for our Republican legislators and statewide officials. During the 2023 legislative session, our volunteers have put in hundreds of hours in committee rooms advocating for issues that are important to hard working Texans.

We’re also busy helping to build the “farm team:” as one notable example, own Dawn Buckingham, former state Senator and Travis County resident in Lakeway, was elected Land Commissioner in November 2022 by a margin of 56-44%. While most of the credit is due to a strong campaign, we helped give fmr. Sen. Buckingham a springboard for this important run for this essential statewide office! And we'll be there for her whenever she needs a few bold Republicans to stand in the gap.

No. 1:
Republican candidates whose districts include all or part of Travis County depend on us!

We may be a very gerrymandered county, but this works out to our advantage in that we have several Congressional members representing Travis County on Capitol Hill in D.C. -- some of whom represent all or part of our county.

While Travis County does not always turn out a majority of voters for a Republican candidate, we often do make the difference in multi-county contests.

As one example, Congressman Michael McCaul (CD-10), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs committee, was re-elected by a margin of 63-34% in 2022, in a district which includes western Austin and Lakeway and extends to College Station. A higher turnout of Republican voters in Travis County -- even if not a winning majority in this county alone --- made it possible for McCaul to win by a larger margin across the other counties he represents. Translation: we contributed greatly to keeping a ranking Republican in office!

The same goes for ...

Congressman Pete Sessions (CD-17), a senior member of the House Financial Services committee, was easily re-elected to CD-17 by a margin of 66-34% in his district in 2022, which includes all of Pflugerville and extends up to Waco.

Congressman Chip Roy (CD-21), a member of the House Judiciary committee who represents southwestern Travis County and the Hill Country, won 63-37% in 2022.

Texas Sen. Donna Campbell (SD-25), who represents southwestern Travis County in a district which includes the Hill Country and part of San Antonio, easily won re-election to SD-25 by a 63-37% margin in 2022.

Texas Rep. Ellen Troxclair (Texas HD 19) was previously the lone remaining conservative member of the Austin City Council, and was elected with the support of TCRP. Thanks to her election to the newly-created HD-19, which includes western Travis County and a number of Hill Country counties, we again have GOP representation in the Texas House for the Austin area after Sen. Dawn Buckingham left her Capitol office to become Land Commissioner.

We also played a key role in Austin's 10-1 geographic redistricting plan, starting off with three Republican districts out of 10 in the City of Austin. Most recently, in 2020, Mackenzie Kelly unseated a radical Democrat incumbent in District 6 in Northwest Austin.
